Testing a few programs

March 4, 2009

Yesterday I was in the middle of editing Geek Dad’s Guide to Free Stuff (I did finally get it updated, so check it out) and our internet dropped out. I almost lost most of the updates for a few not very fun reasons and decided to look into blogging programs for WordPress. I tested out Windows Live Writer (which I’m posting from right now, by the way) a few days ago and wasn’t very into it but I think I’m just used to the WordPress Dashboard. As much as I love posting in the WordPress Dashboard I think I’d like the ability to keep a local draft of my posts as I’m writing them. Or I may just end up back on my Dashboard. Time will tell.

I also downloaded Zoundry Raven to try out. I think I like it better but it seems to have issues with my layout. I’ll probably hop between both programs a few times to figure out which one I like more.

On twitter I’ve been using twhirl for a while. I tried several different programs, Firefox add-ons, etc. and when I found twhirl I loved it. I’m not getting rid of it, but I found TweetDeck. ZOMG this is awesomesauce. One problem I’m having lately is keeping up with direct messages and @replies in the middle of all of the posts… not anymore! TweetDeck has three columns; All Friends, Replies, Direct Messages. There’s an option to mush it all back into a single column, and plenty of options to customize it. Even my wife is using it, and I couldn’t get her to use twhirl for very long. =P

Now, this is going to be my first post from Windows Live Writer. Let’s see how this goes! Ready? And… Post!

When you figure out which blog editor you like better, can you write a post as to why? The windows live team seems to monitor blogs about their software and I have had my questions answered directly.

@Steven: That’s…a little creepy. Cool, and useful, but creepy.

@Steven: Yeah I probably will. Right now I’m enjoying WLW but the problem I’m seeing all across the net is outdated information and plugins. They suggest using their Firefox add-on for blogging straight from your browser, but it has been dead since Firefox 3.0 was released. They do have an experimental plugin that they don’t tell you about, but you have to hunt for it on the Firefox add-ons page. After you find it you have to create an account there to get a hold of it because it is still listed as experimental.

WLW is easy enough to use, but it just feels like they’ve let it get dusty in some areas.

I’ll probably post a few posts from Zoundry next and see what works better for me.
