New Header – Bite Me

August 26, 2009

New header. BOOM!

Yeah, you wish I’d just leave it at that. No, I have to post about it and explain it.

When I made the last header I felt that it was a bit too busy and I just wasn’t entirely happy with it. I liked it or I never would have used it, but it just seemed so busy and large! I’ve been mulling it over in my head, and I finally decided to put some ideas together and share them with my wife and a few friends. The vote was unanimous and the header that you see now was the favorite.

I took the things I liked about the old header and put them together in a smaller size (height) along with some new items:

- A hilarious geek joke.

I’ve also been wanting to use that overused but awesome and hilarious “bite me” joke forever. Enjoy it. Bite me.

- The Ubuntu logo.

From what I’ve read I’m okay to use this so long as it is clear what it represents. If there is an issue with this then I invite anybody to contact me (or leave a comment) with a correction.

I added Ubuntu’s logo to my header because I moved over to Ubuntu a while back (as I’ve blogged about a few times) and I love it. It runs amazing on my laptop and it is everything I have ever wanted in a Linux distro (and I’ve tried several over the years). I wanted to pay tribute to them (a little free advertising always rocks, right?) plus show off my favorite OS and geekiness.

Oh, for the record I’m running Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (Ubuntu 9.04).

Anyway, what do you think about header? I love it.

Humor Rant – Park Somewhere Else!

August 18, 2009

WARNING: HUMOR RANT AHEAD. Exaggerated, pessimistic, and possibly offensive content ahead. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. MUAHAHAHAHAH.

No, this isn’t my first humor rant about parking. Yes, this one is different. Shut up and read it. Read both! Tell your friends! Click the Share/Save button below! SIMON SAYS, READ THE RANT!

Let’s say you pull in to the parking lot and you’re going to run in and grab some things. You may be 5 minutes, you may be 2 hours, but you park in an empty area of the parking lot right? Here’s the idea:

|_|
|X|

Your vehicle is the X, and there’s an empty spot in front of you. WHY IS IT THAT NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU ARE IN THE STORE (or whatever), SOMEBODY HAS TO PARK DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU? Same thing for a parking spot right behind you! SOMEBODY ALWAYS HAS TO TAKE THAT SPOT!

Seriously! Is it that hard to park? I have to be your guide? You have to block my path? I could park at the top of the parking lot, a mile away from the store, and the fattest person I’ve ever met would park directly in front of me JUST BECAUSE. They can’t even walk from their couch to their bed without stopping for a rest, but they can walk a mile to the store JUST TO PARK IN FRONT OF ME.

WHY?! I know I’m not the only one that deals with this. OR AM I? IS THE WORLD PARKING LOT STALKING ME? No, no it isn’t.

Why does it bug me? I don’t really know. Why are you doing it? You don’t know either. SO QUIT IT.

This is what you SHOULD do:

|_|_|Y|
|X|_|_|

This is what you REALLY do:

|Y|_|_|
|X|_|_|

Shame on you.

My Feelings About Moving

August 16, 2009

In a recent post I said I would update with my feelings about the move to Houston. Here they are, as well as I can put into a blog post anyway:

Just over five years ago I met the love of my life online. She lived in Houston, TX and I lived near Atlanta, GA. We knew each other for a year before meeting in person for the first time. The day after I met her in person, I proposed to her. Call me crazy for doing it, call her crazy for saying yes, but that’s how it went! We traveled back and forth to see each other (yay for airplanes) for too long, but it definitely wasn’t enough.

We decided together that she would move here to marry me (rather than me moving there). We felt that it was the best thing for us and so we went with it. We don’t have any regrets in that! She moved away from her family and friends to be with me; she loves me quite a lot. <3

It has been almost three years since we got married. Since then we’ve grown a lot together! We’ve even had a little boy of our own, who is amazing in so many ways. Noah has been in this world for a year and a half, and my family has been there since before we even knew we were pregnant. They were there through the entire pregnancy and up through now.

I’m very happy to have had my family so close for so long. I feel fortunate in that, good and bad times. I do hope that they feel the same way.

Lynn and I made the decision to stay here for the last three years together. Together we have made the difficult decision to move off to Houston to be with her family. The decision was not made lightly as there was a LOT to consider! We don’t want it to seem like we’re trading out our families; my family is here and hers is there. It isn’t about a “trade” we want to make every so often to live near her family or mine. We took a lot of things into consideration: Family, jobs, long term living, etc.

Where we live right now we’re looking at roughly 15% unemployment. Yes, that can change (and probably will because of a few things happening here right now) but at the time it is 15% and not really looking up. It could be years before things get better here, and I’ve had two interviews in the last year. I posted about one, and another one happened right after we decided to move. The interview didn’t go very well. I’ve been at the “I’ll do anything” point for a job for a long time and I don’t think my family realizes this. I’ll do anything and I’ve had two failed interviews. We’re running out of options here as far as money goes.

Houston, TX has roughly half of the unemployment rate here, and that is an amazing difference. No, this isn’t 100% about working, but that part does matter. Lynn’s going to be by her family, one (or both) of us have better job opportunities there, and the end result is to be better off in life. We want out of debt, we want to be living in a better place, and we want Noah to have a better life. Unfortunately moving there puts us further away from my family, but we don’t know how long we’ll be there or how long they’ll be living here (mom is always talking about how she wants to move out of their current house).

Life goes on, things change, time passes by, etc. etc. but I can say that I am happy with our decision to move, and I have no doubt that this is the right thing for us. Sometimes the right choice isn’t the easy choice, and it sure would be a lot easier just to stay here another year than to pack up and move off.

I love both of our families, and in the end all I want is support in our decision from both sides.

Updates and Stuff 8/16

I wasn’t really sure what to update about, so I’m just going to throw a bunch of things out there and call it an update. Boom.

I’ve been doing this new sleep before midnight (usually around 10 – 11, depending on when I get bored online) and then wake up before 10 AM thing. During the day when I get bored of the internet, I step away from the computer. There’s a lot to do offline so there’s no point in sitting around. When I get bored is usually about the time I’ve caught up on everything I need to do online.

I wish people would be more honest when they’re supposedly buying something from you. If you decide you don’t want something, MAN UP and say you don’t want it. Don’t run and hide, stop answering your phone, ignore emails, vanish, or whatever it is you do right after showing interest in something. If you don’t want it that’s fine, but why drag it out? Also don’t wait until you’ve agreed on a price to suddenly announce that you live an hour away and expect somebody to meet you halfway; say important information UP FRONT. I can’t put a couch on my shoulder or on top of my car and carry it 30 miles! This information is even clear in the post – you need a truck and two people to load it up. Sure, I’ll help, but I can’t pull a truck out of my butt.

Even though I have to try to keep up with the dates I am just not doing a good job of it lately. I even labeled this post 8/15 and was halfway through it before I realized it is the 16th.

Packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, packing, and did I mention packing? There’s also rearranging and stressing involved.

We’re having a yard sale with my family in early September and I’m looking forward to that. I do hope some of this furniture sells before then so we don’t have to figure out how to move it all over there in time, but we’ll see.

Guess I’m going to take my list of CDs for sale and price them all for the yard sale. I’ll also be grabbing a slimfast for breakfast because I’m awesome like that. Morning post FTW!

Moving Updates 8/10

August 10, 2009

So far I’ve emptied out two closets for box stacking, and moved a bunch of things around. Most of our books are either packed up and stacked in the closets, or they’re in another box of things I’m trying to sell.

We have several boxes of Yard Sale stuff that are either already at mom’s (we’re having a yard sale together next month) or they’re here to be taken over there.

We’re selling a bookshelf, a couch, a chest of drawers, and a computer desk. I wish they’d hurry up and sell so we can utilize the space they’re taking up! It’s kind of a pain to deal with, but it’ll be worth it. Plenty of books and other stuff too. Anybody want a Sega Genesis with games? PSOne or PSX? You know you do! =P

Hibbett’s Sports in the mall here had a TONNNN of boxes the other night when we asked. I pulled around to the back of the store and packed a ridiculous amount of empty boxes into the car. Trunk, front passenger seat, back passenger seat, all packed out with boxes! It was crazy, and they’re stored wherever I’m able to store them here in our living room.

Today we dropped by the town’s recycling center and spoke with the manager about grabbing some newspaper for moving. He told us to take as much as we wanted, so I grabbed the milk crate out of our car (we use it for whatever) and stuffed it full of newspapers. WIN! I’ll have to get to packing up frames and decorations and stuff today.

I see progress, but I do feel like I’m running out of time. It feels like we’re moving tomorrow and there’s so much left to do. I do realize that time will fly by so I need to keep getting this stuff done though. Time really does fly, fun or not (those of you sitting in a cubicle may wish to argue – leave a comment =P). I’ve done the last minute packing thing before – it sucks.

Back to being productive.

Another For Real Real Update!

August 7, 2009

Let’s start big: MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT!

We’re moving to Houston.

I’m sure you remember our visit to Houston last March.

Things are pretty much set in motion and we’re getting everything packed up, sold, donated, whatever needs to be done. I hate moving (in general – packing, loading, unloading, etc.) soooo much, but in the end it will be worth it. I’ll update with more thoughts/feelings/details later.

Okay, smaller announcement/angry message.

A massive UP YOURS to whoever managed to steal MY bank card information and use it AT A DISGUSTING RESTAURANT and overdraft my bank account. FOR CRAPPY FOOD. Also, UP YOURS to the manager of that restaurant who was too “busy” according to the RUDE employee (“he busy”) to help us out.

High five to my bank for helping me get this straightened out. It may have taken multiple phone calls, but it’s getting fixed.

A For Real Real Update

August 2, 2009

I realize that my for real real updates have been slightly scarce lately. The job situation, or rather the not having a job situation has been pretty rough. Money, emotions, stress, and plenty of time spent hunting for a job with only the one single fail of an interview.

Keep me in your thoughts, wish me luck, whatever it is you do. I need to find something soon.
