A For Real Real Update
August 2, 2009I realize that my for real real updates have been slightly scarce lately. The job situation, or rather the not having a job situation has been pretty rough. Money, emotions, stress, and plenty of time spent hunting for a job with only the one single fail of an interview.
Keep me in your thoughts, wish me luck, whatever it is you do. I need to find something soon.
Hotel Experience Over Skills
July 17, 2009On Tuesday I received a phone call asking for me to come in the following morning (early) to interview for a third shift desk clerk position at a hotel. I fit the requirements for the position and then some! Typing skills, data entry experience, familiar (and skilled) with Microsoft Office, and we all know I’m a night owl… and so on.
I was told after the interview to call on Friday around 2 PM if I hadn’t been called. I waited all day Wednesday, all day Thursday, and until 2 PM Friday wondering if I would get the job. Hopeful, excited, and… nothing. When I made the phone call I was given some crappy message that sounded like she read off of a sheet of paper; some predetermined “let down” message to inform me that somebody with prior hotel experience was chosen for the position.
So I have all of the skills, plus many more, and I fit the position perfectly but they chose somebody else based on prior hotel experience.
WHAT?
Have a little common sense! First, how am I supposed to get “hotel experience” if I don’t get hired by a hotel? Second, if I fit every other requirement for the position and obviously learn new things very easily, why would you not choose me?
I’ve had a lot of great experience, but no I’ve never worked in a hotel. Shame on me.
I’m not being cocky, and I certainly don’t think I’m anything amazing. Lynn is constantly getting onto me for talking bad about myself, but even I’m able to see that this was a poor decision on the part of the hotel.
Whatever.
How was YOUR day? @_@
Job Hunting is Interesting
June 2, 2009As many of you know I’m a jobless bum. Well, not really a bum, but I’m jobless. I hate it, but what do you do? You look for a job. Or I do. Are you confused yet?
Job hunting has been interesting. I’ve spoken with managers, employees, district managers, and in some cases I’ve spoken with nobody at all. I constantly hear, "we’ll get back with you on that" or, "your resume is solid" and other misleading comments. What they mean to say is, "We’re not hiring." and, "lololololololol".
In some rare cases when I’m lucky, I seem to get a rejection email. Most of the time I just hear nothing at all. I did get another call from a MLM scam recently, and made sure to let him know that I’m sick of requesting to be removed from their call list. His reply? "FINE. We’ll stop calling you!" – Well, yes, that’s what I’ve been saying. =D
I’ve placed applications both online and in person. Online is my favorite; the last time I showed up to put applications in, it wasn’t until I got home that I realized I never put pants on. I guess I’m spoiled by the online process. Even fast food places are moving their application process online! I see it as both good and bad.
When a company has their application process online, this gives me better access to them. I don’t have to go in at specific hours; I can apply at 3 AM and be considered. I don’t have to worry about interrupting customers or going in during a rush and irritating a manager. There are so many great things about applying online! There are downsides, too. When applying online, you’re just a name or a number. See, by going in to place an application (even if you get some empty reply like "We’ll give you a call!") you at least get to make an impression on somebody. If they have an online application, all you get is "You’ll need to go online to apply." and then you get lost in the numbers again.
Even with the downsides, I do prefer being able to apply online. At least that way I don’t get the empty replies, and I can apply to multiple companies that interest me, and multiple positions, all without making it an all day trip into the burning sunshine.
See? Interesting.
